Academy Lofts is a story of preservation done right. Located in the former George W. Adair Elementary School, the project has transformed an abandoned historic schoolhouse into a mixed-income housing community with deeply affordable units.
The renovation preserved original architecture—like classroom chalkboards, plaster walls, and tiled hallways—while adding modern amenities and energy efficiency upgrades. The result is a space that feels both classic and current.
What makes Academy Lofts exceptional is its mission. A portion of units are reserved for artists and creatives, and another portion are set aside as affordable housing, thanks to partnerships with Invest Atlanta and development group Stryant.
Beyond housing, the building also hosts nonprofits and small businesses on the ground floor. It’s a true live-work model.
Academy Lofts stands as a symbol of what adaptive reuse can look like in Atlanta. Rather than bulldozing history, it honors it. And it contributes to a housing ecosystem that includes everyone.
